One of the things I love most about New York City is the late-night-food options. I am not talking jumbo slice pizza or McDonalds, I am talking sit down, restaurant experiences that still serve food beyond 10 PM. A couple of weeks ago, I took the bus up to New York and got in around 10:45 PM. By the time I got settled into the hotel, I was starving and a slice of pizza just wasn’t going to cut it. After doing a quick Google Maps search around my area, I found Udon West.
We wandered into Udon West around 11:30 PM and it was packed. Not with people just there for the drinks, but with people actually seated at tables and eating. It was really awesome. Udon West is an unassuming place from the outside, but upon entering you immediately feel like you have been transported to the hip streets of Tokyo (not that I have been there, but I am just guessing). The music is loud, the drinks are being poured from pitchers and the food is being made in the open kitchen right in the middle of the restaurant.
They had a great beer and sake selection (we went with Ichiban) and a great DYI udon selection, as well as some premade selections. We went with some takoyaki and the shrimp and veggie tempura udon with a side of poached egg and it was incredible.
Next time you find yourself wandering around Mid Town NYC, definitely try Udon West, you not regret it!
